Handy hints

I might be a newbie at this but there are a couple of things that I've found out that might be worth sharing.

Plates - just don't use them. They are picked up and flung away or the nice pictures on the bottom distract the baby from the food. It's much better to have a good clean big washable work surface like a high chair tray.

Food - this can be much slippery than you'd ever imagine and Goosey gets very frustrated if he can't hang on to something he's eating. For bananas scrub the skin, half in length then cut into 3 inch chunks. Take the skin off the top half and hand to the baby. You can leave the rest of the banana on the tray for them to pick up later. I found if that if he didn't know that he was supposed to be eating the flesh and he ate the skin first, well it didn't taste nice so overboard they ALL went. However if he knew which part to eat he was determined to get that bit into his mouth the next time. For other slippery foods (e.g. avocado) halve length ways, cut into manageable strips and (here's the good part) cut a nodule out half way down.

Spoons - you need the flat ones to begin with as they can't get the food out of the deeper spoon. I've started loading the spoons on the back so the yoghurt etc. can be sucked off.

Wastage - it was bugging me that a lot of the food put in front of Goosey a lot would be wasted e.g. anything fist sized would be discarded as he couldn't eat past that point in his hand. With things like banana/avocado etc. I'd pick these up, mash them and spread on a rice cake and he'd finish them no problem.

I'm sure there's lots more so I'll add to this post when I get them.

  1. omg i have picked up about 5 tips just from this first paragraph!! we have been trying blw for about a week now and i feel in a rut already. today was half thinking of just giving him mashed food as he is sooo ready to start solids and i just cant seem to get myself together enough to have batons of roasted veg for him to try! will read on and see if can score more ideas...!

  2. Ruth I have never roasted a baton for Goosey as I've never been organised enough either. I tend to steam veg e.g. parsnips, carrots, corgettes, broccoli or give him raw food such as avocado (he loves it) or fruit. Sweet potato is really simple as well - just wash, prick with fork, dry, wrap in kitchen towel & five mins on microwave on high. Let it sit for a min, peel & cut into batons and cool.

I'm sure as you get on you'll find others. Please share when you do as I'm not a great cook!

  3. oh i will try this tonight!
i confess i made some lumpy puree yest...he took a few spoonfuls last night at dinnertime but when i tired him this morning he refused after one spoon of carrot and one of parsnip. i so dont want to get into spoonfeeding, his clamped shut jaw and turn of the head reminded me why i wanted to go the blw way..im finding it really hard though, we just dont seem to be progressing very far and he is sooo ready for solids, he was 19lbs at his last weigh in 2 weeks ago and i really want him wanting less boob!

  4. full of renewed optimisim after reading various bits on the BLW website, ds got some banana after his lunchtime milk. he took a huge bite and proceeded to gag horrendously on it. he wouldnt go near it after that and i was within 2 seconds of pulling him out of the chair to turn him upside down. this also happened yesterday when i foolishly gave him half a liga thinking it would just disintegrate in his mouth like rusks or rice cakes. we were both crying at the end of that misadventure. that was the end of our blw for yesterday and also was the point when i did a spot of lumpy puree for the freezer. am wary all over again now after todays gagfest. i wish he would stop gagging, it takes away all my enthusiasm. when do they stop this!!! not sure how much longer i can watch it

  5. oh it is horrible when they do that but I promise you it gets better. Goosey does still gag occasionally but it doesn't bother him now. He'll eat, sometimes too big of a bite, will gag it back up & spit it out. But we noticed a big improvement after the first 10 days.

I've taken to splitting the banana now - if you press the sides of a peeled banana it does split into 3 & I break these strips into 2 inch pieces. Use it as spread on rice cakes or bread if there's much left over. Lots of food can be used as spread (de boned tinned salmon/avocado & tomato mix etc)which is a good way of getting food into them if you are worried. Messy too!!!
